Defferre, Gaston
(1910-1986)
   political figure
   Born in Marsillargues, Gaston Defferre was, since 1933, a militant Socialist (SFIO) and, during World War II, a member of the Resistance. He was mayor of Marseille (1944-45 and from 1953 until his death), served as a deputy (1946-58, 1962-86), and senator (1959-62). Named minister for France overseas in the guy mollet cabinet (1956-57), he contributed to the passing of the law modifying the status of the countries of the French union (July 23, 1956). Minister of the interior of decentralization (1981-84), then of the Plan for Territorial Development (laurent fabius cabinet, 1984-86), Defferre was the author of the law on decentralization (1982).
